UGH! You’ve stumbled across your content on a random site that its not supposed to be on. 😑 We’ve all been there and it’s super frustrating when it happens. People will always steal your content for one reason or another, usually just because they’re jerks. Luckily there is something you can do to get it removed.
DCMA Takedowns
A DMCA Takedown is when content is removed from a website or internet platform at the request of the owner of the content. The DMCA Takedown is a well established and accepted internet standard followed by website owners and internet service providers everywhere. Although the DMCA is part of US Copyright law, a DMCA Takedown does not always require the content to be copyrighted in order to process a takedown notice and for the content to be taken down by the website owner or OSP. Simply Stated: the fact the content is yours, or if the subject in the photo or video is you, can be reason enough to process a takedown notice AND for the content to be taken down. Most DCMA Takedowns require:
a detailed description of the copyrighted work you believe is being infringed upon;
A description of the location of where the alleged infringing content appears;
Your contact information (including name, address, telephone number, and email address);
A statement that you have a good faith belief that the alleged infringing use is not authorized by you as the copyright owner, your agent, or by law;
A statement affirming that, under penalty of perjury, the information in the notice is accurate and that you are indeed authorized to act on behalf of the copyright owner; and
An original signature of the copyright owner or someone authorized on the owner’s behalf to assert infringement of the copyright as well as to submit the claim.
